HKS is responsible for many of Banner Health’s design standards and room templates, which were used to create efficient and flexible healing environments that also support the hospital’s teaching functions. Similarly, state designation of trauma center level is also used in the United States for trauma centers. The Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix serves one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and it is the tallest hospital in Arizona. The trauma center level is assigned based on trauma volume, resources, and educational and research commitment (3). The Emergency Department is a Level II Trauma Center and the Radiology Department offers state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including MRI PET/CT scanning. Planned with growth and flexibility in mind, the expansion includes infrastructure for two additional towers. The project team developed a phased approach to effectively design and build the new emergency department without impacting existing operations. Also included is an 1,100-car parking garage. The tower has 312 private rooms, four ICU floors, seven medical-surgical floors and two shell floors. The emergency department includes 60 exam rooms, 40 observation rooms, five trauma bays, four operating rooms, a global response center, two helipads and an emergency generator plant. The 293,120-square-foot (27,231 sm), three-story emergency department is designed as a podium to a 372,476-square-foot (34,604 sm), 13-story replacement patient tower. Residents participate in yearly Electives including EMS, Research, Advanced Ultrasound, and International Medicine at partner sites in South Africa, Palau, Nepal, Wilderness Medicine, Administration, and more.To expand the capacity and capabilities of the Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix campus with a replacement patient tower and new emergency department. The Arizona Children's Center offers comprehensive medical services including: a Pediatric Emergency Services with approximately 20,000 visits per year, in-patient Pediatric unit with a wide breadth of subspecialties, 12 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a Pediatric Burn Unit, a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, a Level III, 40-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (one of three in the Phoenix Valley), and Child Life Specialists. It also is host to the Arizona Burn Center, the second largest Burn Center in North America. The medical center offers Adult Emergency Medical Services with an ED census of approximately 60,000 patients/year (and growing). Maricopa Medical Center is a 449-bed, Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center that cares for patients from all over the state of Arizona and that specifically serves as the safety net for Maricopa County. ![]()
